The art of storytelling in a ‘Digital Utopia’ – Chapter 2

In chapter 1 I talked about the art of collaboration – ‘a new power force of innovation combined with technology that creates special experiences to inspire and excite the reader’ – something I like to call the ‘Digital Utopia’.

In this chapter I discussed how big brands can collaborate and build real life experiences online (if you missed it have a read).

In chapter 2 of the ‘art of storytelling’ I will look at a different type of collaboration with the most basic of social and mobile tools – Airbnb presents Hollywood & Vines. A first-of-its-kind short film made entirely out of six-second Vines submitted from all over the world.

Hollywood & Vines” was directed via Twitter and shot entirely on Vine. For four days, people around the world worked with Miles Jay the director. This global experiment goes to prove how small the world can really be when connected. The aim was to create a single story about travel, adventure and finding your place in the world. The result was 100 Vines taken around the world from as far as Kansas to Kuwait.

To get the quality of vines, the director began a direct dialogue with the best Viners to get the best shot. It took the team a week of editing and eventually 100 submissions made the final cut.

The representatives at Airbnb stated: “This was something that had never been attempted: not an ad, but a true work of art. It was a chance to use a new form of technology to explore the boundaries of collaborative creation.”

Not only did they crowdsource from their online community, but they also spent time editing and crafting the 4:30 minute masterpiece over 288,532 views.
The most commented thing of the Vine was the music, which was commissioned by Rob Simonsen. The final track is called – Journey of a Paper Airplane.

I’ll leave you with this quote.
‘To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination’. Albert Einstein

So Innovate, collaborate and nurture new thinking. And enjoy the ‘Digital Utopia’!

Over and out.
